Valorie is the new Director of the Center as of October 1, 2007. Valorie comes to UNC Charlotte from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland, where she served as the Assistant Dean for Distance and Continuing Education, the Associate Dean for Communications and Information Technology, and the Executive Director of Online Learning. These experiences, combined with her Ed.D. in Adult Education from NC State University, provide an ideal background for her leadership of CTL as it continues its mission of providing professional development and support for teaching and learning and instructional technologies. Valorie also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Educational Leadership in the College of Education.

Garvey leads the Center’s Instructional Programs, which focus mainly on providing faculty professional development opportunities and resources regarding instructional innovations, pedagogical needs, and assessment of learning.
Garvey enjoys helping faculty members, staff, and graduate assistants to design and develop the instructional aspects of their courses. He also provides a “bridging” perspective between best practices in teaching and learning and various instructional technologies. His work involves the practical application of research methods and instructional systems design methods to various instructional projects at the university.

John provides strategic leadership to coordinate the projects and activities of the Technical Systems Team. He serves as a technical liaison between the Center, Information and Technology Services, and the respective academic colleges and departments.
John enjoys collaborating with academic units to best meet their needs regarding campus-wide teaching and learning goals, and he is grateful to serve in a role that integrates his technical knowledge, communication, and project management skills with his understanding of sound pedagogical practices. His mission is to ensure reliable and stable systems that serve the teaching and learning needs of campus faculty and students.

As part of our Technical Systems Team, Nicole is responsible for applications programming and development. She analyzes new technologies to determine their feasibility and benefit to our campus, and then works towards implementing these technologies. She develops applications and other programmable solutions, integrating them with new and existing systems and processes. Nicole provides specialized consulting and technical support for various learning technologies. In addition to administration and support of our learning management system (LMS), Nicole also works closely with other areas of ITS to ensure that we maintain the integrity and security of our learning system data.

The Center’s Instructional Programs team is glad to welcome Jaesoon to the department. As the Instructional Design Specialist, Jaesoon provides expertise in best practices in teaching and learning, assists faculty in developing exemplary courses and redesigning large enrollment courses, and works to promote scholarly teaching.
With nearly 15 years experience in teaching, research, and instructional design, Jaesoon most recently worked in Indiana University’s Knowledge Acquisition and Projection Lab and also worked as an instructor in IU’s School of Education. Her focus has always been to help educators and learners to achieve their instructional goals through effective instructional design.

Sam provides training and professional development support to faculty and staff. This includes developing workshops, Web-based video tutorials, and producing the Center's podcast series, Teaching and Learning Matters. In addition to these and other related projects, Sam is also responsible for our Centra system administration, including determining and scheduling configurations and updates, maintaining the user database, and managing events. He also provides faculty training in the use of Centra.

Caryl provides support and training to faculty, staff, and students, and also is responsible for workshop and tutorial development and implementation. In addition to her regular support duties and special projects, Caryl is also responsible for maintaining the CTL technology lab, including updating desktop machines and creating new lab images. She works with colleagues, junior team members, and other ITS staff to ensure proper functioning and upkeep of lab equipment in accordance with University standards.

Melanie provides training and professional development support to faculty and staff and has been with the University since 2007. She is responsible for workshop and tutorial development and implementation, with a particular focus on leading Moodle training. Much of Melanie's work involves promoting best practices and ensuring high quality in online learning. In addition, Melanie works a lot with Camtasia Studio and other interesting instructional technologies, and she also seves as the the assistant Centra administrator.

As part of our Technical Systems Team, Debbie is responsible for the design and development of our departmental websites. She specializes in graphical design, web accessibility and standards, and strives to ensure that our websites adhere to these important guidelines. Debbie also provides general administration and support for our learning management system (LMS) and other related applications. She works closely with other departmental staff to offer assistance on technical troubleshooting, system analysis, and problem resolution.

As the Faculty Fellow for the Center, Maria is involved primarily with our instructional programs to help faculty with professional development in teaching and learning. She is available to help all faculty, staff, and graduate assistants in developing resources for the classroom through her pedagogical workshops and seminars and by holding individual consultations. Maria has expertise in a variety of educational areas and especially enjoys assessment and also peer evaluation of teaching. Maria is also a faculty member in the College of Education.

Mike is the Center's Instructional Technologist through a joint appointment with the College of Health and Human Services. Prior to this position, Mike worked as a senior project associate within the Office of Outreach and International Affairs at Virginia Tech. Much of his previous experience has focused on working with faculty to develop new ways to integrate technology such as videoconferencing, three-dimensional displays, and virtual environments into the classroom. Besides working with the Center for Teaching and Learning, his main focus will be to help connect CHHS with innovative programs throughout the university.

Pamela is the Center’s Administrative Assistant. She is primarily responsible for handling the Center’s day to day logistics and paperwork. She helps to maintain the department budget, provides support for hiring new staff members, and assists with special events. She works closely with the Director on the Center’s ongoing projects and reports directly to her. Pamela has expertise in the administration of non-profit organizations as well as government organizations.

Saurabh is currently working on his Master’s in Computer Science after completing an undergraduate program in Delhi, India. Additionally, he has gained industry software development experience while working for Infosys Technologies Ltd. in India. Saurabh’s main focus is programming projects for our department, but he also works on other vital assignments as needed.
