How Do You Define Hybrid/Blended Course?

Some professors use online resources during classroom instruction. Some give online learning materials and assignments, and then reduce class seat time requirement. Some do not require class seat time at all although students can choose to come to the class. Some give instruction in the online environment only and do not hold class meetings.
Which format are we referring to when we talk about hybrid/blended course? This EDUCAUSE article on blended learning defines it as:
…courses that combine face-to-face classroom instruction with online learning and reduced classroom contact hours (reduced seat time).
The article also emphasizes that the definition of blended learning, however, should not focus on the ratio of delivery modalities but on the pedagogical approach that combines the effectiveness and socialization opportunities of the classroom with the technologically enhanced active learning possibilities of the online environment.
