Effects of Frequent Group Quizzing on Student Learning in Large-Enrollment Classrooms

While lecture is one of the most common teaching methods in large enrollment classes, studies show that attention quickly wanes in lectures. A group-based method of classroom testing was used in several large enrollment biology classes. The quiz scores, exam scores, and overall course grades indicate that this approach enhanced student learning, despite the substantially reduced amount of time spent by the instructor lecturing to the class.
