Question:
Students come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide variety of needs, only some of which can be addressed in a classroom environment. What services are provided at UNC Charlotte for those students who need additional help outside of class in order to be successful?
Resources for Students:
- Tutorial Services, a section of the Center for Academic Excellence, offers traditional one on one tutoring for many lower level courses, such as math and languages. A wide variety of subjects is available. http://www.ucae.uncc.edu/ts/ts_front.html
- Supplemental Instruction offers help in challenging courses. The goal is to help students ‘learn how to learn’ the material, and students who attend the program often improve their grades. - Building Educational Strengths and Talents offers advising, tutoring, and other services as part of the Federally funded Trio program. First generation college students, students with a limited income, and students with a documented disability are able to participate. Services include academic advising, tutoring, leadership development, career development, a dedicated computer lab, and enrichment activities. http://www.ucae.uncc.edu/best/best_services.html
- Students Obtaining Success is a program that encourages students to attend classes and weekly meetings with peer mentors, meet regularly with an academic advisor, and communicate frequently with professors. Students take learning style inventories to become more familiar with their strengths and weaknesses, create academic plans and goals, and get help navigating the maze of available student resources. http://www.ucae.uncc.edu/sos/sos_home.html
- The Learning Lab and Study Smarter Workshops provide study materials and space to students, in addition to study skills workshops. They have software, videos, DVDs, and books geared toward specific courses. http://www.ucae.uncc.edu/learnlab/learnlab_home.html
- The University Transition Opportunities Program eases the transition from high school to college with a five week summer program for underrepresented students. Throughout the semester, UTOP participants meet with writing tutors, study skills counselors, and attend weekend extracurricular events. http://www.mas.uncc.edu/UTOP.htm
- SAFE is targeted to underrepresented students, and provides individual tutoring, personal counseling, study sessions, interaction with faculty, and leadership development. http://www.mas.uncc.edu/SAFE.htm
- PRODUCE is designed to recruit and retain underrepresented students into the fields of science, technology, engineering, or math. Participation in PRODUCE involves faculty and peer mentoring, peer tutoring, financial aid, social and academic activities, and a social and academic network. http://www.mas.uncc.edu/PRODUCE.htm

- The Learning Communities program focuses on allowing students to build a support network among their peers. Students take some of the same courses and often live in the same residence hall. Tutors and mentors are also provided. http://www.lc.uncc.edu/
- Freshman Seminar courses serve as an introduction to the university and help students make the transition from high school to college. They help students form relationships with peers and faculty, while building essential academic and personal skills. http://www.ossr.uncc.edu/FS/
- The Common Reading Experience encourages first year students to explore personal, racial, religious, and cultural issues. http://www.provost.uncc.edu/READ/
- The Counseling Center offers various types of counseling: individual counseling, group counseling, and psychological consultations. http://www.counselingcenter.uncc.edu/
- The Career Center offers various programs and services designed to help students find employment after graduation. They hold events, workshops, and career fairs. They also provide career guidance, a resume reviewing service, and a job database. http://www.career.uncc.edu/
- The Student Health Center provides primary medical care, disease prevention, and health education for students, among other services. http://www.studenthealth.uncc.edu/index.htm
- The Office of Adult Services and Evening Services provides support for adult and nontraditional students. Students can meet with an academic advisor, apply for an OASES scholarship, and use the computer lab. http://www.oases.uncc.edu/
- The Writing Resources Center helps students become more effective writers. Tutors are available for one-on-one sessions with students. The Writing Resources Center also does in class presentations about aspects of writing and hosts a print library of writing resources. http://www.uncc.edu/writing/WRCindex.html
- The Honors College is a group designed to promote intensive reading, writing, and discussion among high achieving students. They focus on helping students develop critical thinking and self expression. Students have the opportunity to participate in community service, study abroad, lectures, and senior projects. - The Athletic Academic Center runs study halls and provides tutors for student athletes. They also provide an orientation to campus and assistance with course registration. Members have access to the group’s computer lab. http://aac.uncc.edu/
- Student Computing offers assistance with email, passwords, and 49er accounts, as well as other computer related services. They run the computer labs, offer training for many software programs including MSOffice 2007, and are in charge of campus printing services. http://www.labs.uncc.edu/
- The Writing Resources Center helps students become writers. Tutors are available to work one on one with students on specific assignments or to discuss the writing and editing process. http://www.uncc.edu/writing/wrc.html
- The Dean of Students Office provides access to a variety of programs designed to promote academic and personal integrity and involvement: Greek life, new student programs, minority student support services, off-campus student services, Student Government Association, volunteer services, and women’s programs. http://www.dso.uncc.edu/
- Atkins Library provides many resources for students, from research materials to video editing. Students can access print materials and a plethora of online databases. Sources can be requested from other libraries through the inter-library loan system. Research librarians are available to help students navigate through available resources. Students can borrow books and magazines as well as laptops, projectors, and other equipment. http://library.uncc.edu/
