New Faculty Academy

Overview and Schedule of Activities

Goals/Overview

The New Faculty Teaching Academy (NFTA) will build up and equip a cohort of new faculty members to begin their university teaching career on the right foot, centered on (1) the fundamentals of teaching and the best use of academic technologies, (2) opportunities to network with fellow new faculty and returning faculty at UNC Charlotte, (3) sound course design, instructional alignment, and active learning techniques, and (4) observations and mentoring.  The program requires a one-year commitment.

This program is for newly hired, full-time faculty and it runs from Fall 2018-Spring 2019.

Activities

Activities of the NFTA will center around development of teaching skills, course design, and mentoring. Faculty will participate in a series of monthly meetings, engage in course design, conduct and receive peer observations of teaching, and complete the Center for Teaching and Learning’s Teaching and Learning Essentials Certificate.

The theme for Fall 2018 is “Survival Guide for Your First Semester.” Through a series of monthly meetings and workshops, you will be introduced to key resources to help you navigate and “survive” your first semester of teaching. You will also observe two master teachers and engage in structured dialogue with them about their approach to teaching. Finally, at the end of the semester, you will participate in a series of Course Design and Instructional Alignment workshops to guide you in revising or updating your courses for the spring.

The theme for Spring 2019 is “Thriving in Your Teaching: Course Development and Continuous Improvement.” You will continue to learn advanced pedagogy techniques through monthly meetings and workshops. You will also engage in peer observation of teaching by observing and being observed by your NFTA colleagues.

Time Commitment and Stipend

This program should take about 35 hours of your time to complete. All components of the program are required.

Faculty who complete the program will receive $1,500, either as a stipend or as operating expenses. The stipend/operating expense will be distributed in two installments, one at the end of each semester of successful completion of all required program components.
