The Typical Syllabus
The syllabus is the course contract that serves as an agreement between you and your students about your goals for the course and your expectations for your students.
Syllabi typically include:
- Course description
- Course goals and objectives
- Course topics
- Course meeting times and/or schedule
- Required materials/textbooks
- Grading scale
- Required activities and assessments with due dates
- Course policies
Update Your Syllabus for Hybrid Learning
As you shift your course to a hybrid modality in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this will require that you modify or update your syllabus to include additional information related to the following topics:
- Hybrid course format and expectations
- Hybrid materials/resources (aside from the textbook) available to access online
- Hybrid grading criteria
- Hybrid course policies, as prescribed by the university legal office, on personal protection, face coverings, attendance, sexual harassment, recordings, and more.

With students accessing Canvas often, upload your updated syllabus to an easy-to-find location such as the course home page, the top module, or in the Canvas Syllabus tool (on the left side of the Canvas menu).
